At PiLON safety is our top priority and is embraced from the top down, from senior management to our tradespeople.
All staff receive on-going health and safety training both on-site and at our training, development and vetting centres.
We’re proud to hold The Certificate of Commitment Platinum Award from the Construction Skills Certification Scheme and to have won the British Safety Council International Safety Award four times.
David Barnes, one of our directors, sits on the board of the CSCS as well as on the training committee for the Federation of Master Builders and the Health and Safety committee for the British Safety Council. This gives us the opportunity to aid with government lobbying on safety and training issues, and to pass our knowledge and practices on to other organisations.
Health and safety is integral to everything we do. All operatives carry a PiLON passport, which features a QR code, allowing our staff and customers to check that operatives are qualified for the task they are carrying out. This has already helped reduce snags, defects and complaints as well as accidents.
“It is great to see an FMB member such as PiLON taking the lead when it comes to embracing new technology in this way. This innovation will help all PiLON employees feel more in control of their own training and career development. PiLON is setting the right example as the FMB and its members strive towards greater professionalism in our industry.”
We regularly organise presentations of educational Health and Safety DVDs for our site teams, inviting clients to participate as well.
Every one of our site managers takes a five-day course on Health and Safety. Each individual has to pass a test which qualifies him for the SMSTS.
All our operatives undergo a video induction course and participate in PiLON’s Bronze, Silver and Gold Health and Safety award.
We have launched a near miss reporting system, which has been deliberately focussed into a positive, proactive safety tool.
Our in-house computer system collates the data gathered from site safety visits and near miss reporting, and aids with minimising accident frequency rates.
Learning from near misses report data we then run be-spoke health & safety campaigns, health & safety alerts, DVD’s sessions and toolbox talks to address issues identified.
Scoring our sites measures H&S success against company standards and best practice and all sites are entered on to a leader board. This creates competition between our sites to see who can be the best. In addition, it also provides struggling sites with somewhere to get advice and learn from their peers.
