We are proud to announce one of our greatest achievements of the year so far. The PiLON 2020 Mental Health Initiative has been recognised by the British Safety Council, who have awarded us joint first place for their Wellbeing Initiative Award, out of nearly 300 applicants.
Throughout the lockdowns and movement restrictions of the past year, there has been a growing concern for peoples’ mental wellbeing. At PiLON, we had already recognised the importance of wellbeing and felt we had a moral obligation to support our staff whilst also acknowledging it as a positive investment. As such, the PiLON 2020 Mental Health Initiative was developed and implemented in January 2020.
“When I joined PiLON last January and attended the NHMF Conference on my second day, I was shocked and inspired by the stark figures surrounding mental health in the industry in Aileen Evans’ presentation”, says Joanne De Sousa, Business Development Manager”.
The steps we took were varied and widespread, designed to raise awareness and embed wellbeing into our culture. We launched a number of initiatives at the start of 2020 including the creation of a dedicated website with sources of information and sign-posting to further support. Three of the team were trained and qualified as Mental Health First Aiders, which is now helping the business to spot the early signs that someone may need support. Most crucially, during the lockdown, the frequency of formal and informal video communication including quizzes, bingo and exercise classes was increased to prevent people from feeling isolated or disconnected. In February 2021, representatives from across all departments joined Move for Mind’s Team PiLON, working together to raise over £1300 for Mind.
Upon receiving notification of this award, Managing Director Vlad Nedelcu commented “We are an industry of extremely hard-working individuals. We work long hours and sometimes seem to spend more time with colleagues than family and friends. As an organisation, it is right that we build the capability and mechanisms to support each other”.
This sums up the ethos embraced by all those here at PiLON, and we will continue making a positive impact through our operations for both now and in the future. Thank you again to British Safety Council for this prestigious award.
