PiLON celebrates International Safety Award

The British Safety Council awarded the International Safety Award with Distinction to PiLON’s contribution to the Clarion Housing Group development, located in and around occupied properties in Camden area, North London. Working alongside several other Clarion contractors the contract requires us to work in partnership with other Principal Contractors who each manage their own work streams to ensure a consistent approach to delivery.

Our scope of works is external refurbishment, including the refurbishment and replacement of windows, doors and general roofing repairs within the Clients stock of social housing properties. As well as the refurbishment and replacement of rainwater goods. Other internal works consist of kitchen and bathroom refurbishment together with complete decoration of the property – painting, plastering and electric upgrades which requires multiple disciplines. Within some of the properties we are also carrying out the replacement of heating systems and boilers.

Our winning application scored a massive 53/58, firmly placing us in the Distinction category and clearly demonstrating PiLON’s commitment to health, safety and wellbeing during 2018.

Now in their 61st year, the International Safety Awards recognise and celebrate organisations from around the world which have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the scheme’s independent judges their commitment to preventing workplace injuries and work-related ill health during the previous calendar year.

“The British Safety Council commends PiLON – Clarion Project Team on their achievement. The award is in recognition of their commitment and efforts to keep their employees and workplaces free of injury and ill health. All of those working at PiLON should be rightly proud of their achievement.”

Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council

“Clarion were proud to stand by PiLON their SME partner at the British Safety Council Awards to win the International Safety Award with Distinction on our project in Camden. This is a fantastic achievement brought on by true collaboration and partnership.”

Peter Nourse, Director of Assets, Clarion Housing

Our team of 19 site-based staff carry out, complete and handover our construction works to our Client as per their specification and contract. The focus of our work always has safety at its heart, on site this is managed via Health and safety meetings, zero accidents, near miss reporting and a minimum score of 85% on each safety, health, environment and quality audit. All these initiatives are communicated via our Health and Safety policy and supported through the implementation of an award scheme to promote excellent health and safety practices.

Site tours introduced this year, have been very successful in hazard awareness exercises arranged by the SHEQ Manager, where all operatives attend. Employees participating in Near Miss Reporting has also strengthen the way we manage and avoid accidents and incidents where we work.

The management of resident information and expectations during the works has been another key factor in winning this accolade. We have captured resident and public feedback by holding regular ‘Meet the Contractor’ evenings at local community centres, inviting residents via letter-drops and posters on community notice boards. At such events we discuss the works we are doing, detailing potential risks and hazards, and how we would minimise them. Residents are kept up-to-date with news, progress and performance through regular newsletters, community posters and the free tablet computers handed out to each property by PiLON.
